I'm a huge daylily fan, and this picture does a great job of capturing why (it was taken by me wife [I saw Pirates of the Caribbean at the midnight showing last night, so that is pirate talk. Actually, it was a typo, but it does sound sort of pirate-ish, don't you think?])
This one is called "Red Flag", and the blooms are huge--probably a good nine inches from stem to stem. This area of the garden is fenced off, which is why this lily hasn't been eaten by the deer (actually, I've got the whole back yard and side yards fenced of now, but that is another story).
Here is another reason I like daylilies--they are home to all manner of little beasties (more pirate talk) like this lovely little spring peeper.
Yesterday morning it was this little butterfly, and eastern tailed blue. It rained pretty hard the night before, so I guess it found shelter in this flower.
What a gorgeous summer it has been. Though we've had some hot days, we've also had days like yesterday--early July and highs still only in the mid 70s with temps in the low 50s when I woke this morning. It has finally started raining, the Japanese beetles haven't been bad (yet), and for the moment I seem to have the deer under control. I walk through the garden and open my soul, drinking it all in.
